Class 40 provides fast but affordable 40ft yachts by limiting the use of exotic materials, prohibiting swing keels and restricting water ballast. In order to keep costs down, the use of carbon fibre is prohibited in hull construction, titanium fittings are also prohibited and a maximum of eight sails can be carried on board. However, whilst high-tech construction methods are not permitted, high speeds are achieved due to lightweight construction and a large downwind sail area.
